Channel 5 health editor, and MJA member, Catherine Jones has beaten off tough competition to win the 2017 MIND Media Award for journalist of the year.

Her series of stories detailing the human cost of failings in the mental health care system impressed judges who commented: “Her hard work has resulted in exclusives that reveal the extent of the crisis in NHS and private care.”

Catherine took to Twitter to thank the families who had helped her expose the scandal, pointing out: “Our reporting not possible without the courage of those fighting to expose mental health failings.”

And she asked: “If it weren’t for the bravery of bereaved relatives speaking out, how many mental health care failings would never come to light?”

Danny Buckland, a prolific freelancer and member of the MJA executive committee, was also shortlisted for the award for his campaigning articles for the Sunday Express. Judges said his stories “demonstrate how mental health comes in many guises and can affect people from across the social and economic strata”.
